Clean up documents before handoff

Boundaries

What to check before relying on the result

Tips & Tricks

  1. 01
Paste plain text for cleaner counts

Rich text copied from editors can include invisible formatting. Paste as plain text when you need counts that match what will be published.

  2. 02
Use no-space characters for compact surfaces

The character count with spaces is useful for prose. The no-space count is better for UI labels, SMS-style limits, and compact identifiers.

FAQ

02
Does the word counter include punctuation in the character count?

Yes β€” the character count includes all characters including spaces and punctuation. The 'characters (no spaces)' count strips whitespace only.

Is there a word or character limit?

No hard limit. The tool handles long documents β€” blog posts, essays, and manuscripts β€” in your browser; tool code does not submit entered text to a TOOLGRID processing endpoint.

How are words counted?

Words are split on whitespace. 'hello-world' counts as one word; 'hello world' counts as two. This matches how most editors (Google Docs, Microsoft Word) count words.

Does it work with non-English text?

Yes. The tool counts any Unicode text correctly, including Chinese, Arabic, and other non-Latin scripts. Note that Chinese text counting may differ from what you expect since words aren't separated by spaces.
