PDF to Text
Extract all text from a PDF and copy or download it.
Works on text-based PDFs only. Scanned images require OCR.
Why use this tool
01Select one PDF and extract its embedded selectable text in your browser; scanned image PDFs may return empty pages because OCR is not included.
This PDF workflow is designed for common document cleanup and handoff tasks where uploading files would add privacy risk or delay.
Processing runs in the current browser tab, so the practical limit is your device memory and browser support rather than a server quota.

03Confirm the input is the format you intended.

Extract text from two PDF versions of the same document and use a diff tool to identify changes.
Tips & Tricks
- 01Best with embedded selectable text
PDFs created digitally usually contain a text layer that this tool can read, but spacing, reading order, glyph mapping, and custom fonts can still need manual review.
- 02Scanned PDFs require OCR
Scanned documents are images of text, not real text. This tool extracts text only from PDFs with embedded text layers.
- 03Use the Text Diff tool to compare versions
After extracting text from two versions of a document, paste both into the Text Diff Checker to highlight exactly what changed.
FAQ
04Does this tool perform OCR on scanned PDFs?
No. It extracts the embedded text layer from digitally created PDFs. Scanned image PDFs do not contain a text layer and will return empty or minimal output.
Is my PDF uploaded for text extraction?
No. Extraction runs entirely in your browser.
Does extraction preserve formatting like bold or tables?
Plain text extraction does not preserve rich formatting. The output is clean, readable text without styling.
Can I extract text from specific pages?
Use the PDF Split tool to extract specific pages first, then run PDF to Text on the extracted section.
